Arthur ‘Artie’ Rivers, Jr. 91, Retired Framingham DPW Employee, Chaired Framingham July 4th Celebration

FRAMINGHAM – Arthur “Artie” E. Rivers, Jr., 91, a lifelong resident of Framingham, died Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Carlyle House after a period of declining health.

He was the devoted husband of 64 years to the late Mary Louise (Mclaughlin) Rivers who died in 2013.

Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Arthur E. and Alvira (Phillips) Rivers.

Rivers proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 1st. Battalion 10th Infantry Regiment in the European Theater.

For many years he worked for the Town of Framingham Highway and Sanitation Department.

He was an active member of the James J. McGrath Post 74 American Legion for over 50 years, having served as Commander, Post Clerk and Middlesex County Deputy Assistant- Sgt. of Arms and attained the status of Life Member.  He was also a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a former Chair of the Framingham 4th of July Celebration Committee and was instrumental in re-establishing the parade.

He is survived by his daughters, Julia Ann Rivers of Westborough and Carol Sue Bonnell and her husband Michael of Bellingham.

He is also survived by grandsons Stephen Bonnell and his fiancé Tiffany Brandel of Bellingham, Christopher “CJ” Bonnell of Bellingham: two great-grandchildren, Hayden Benton of Whitinsville, Kaleb Bonnell of Bellingham; his sister, Janet Flynn and her husband Rick of West Yarmouth; his brother, Donald Rivers and his wife Carol of Florida as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late infant children, Gloria Jean and Edward Thomas Rivers and the brother of the late Laura Briggs, Victor Rivers and Ruth Mongardi.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass on Wednesday, March 7, at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Church, 251 ConcordStreet in Framingham.

Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Mass National Cemetery in Bourne.

Visiting hours at the Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech Street in Framingham will be Tuesday, March 6, from 6 to 8 p.m.
