FRAMINGHAM – John A. Stefanini, an educator and attorney, former State Representative and selectman from Framingham, today, June 7, officially launched his campaign to be Framingham’s first mayor.

 “It is my strong belief that while Framingham is already a great community, working together we possess the experience, talent and skills to make it even better,” Stefanini said.

 “But in order to accomplish this goal,” Stefanini continued, “we need to work together, neighborhood by neighborhood, in a transparent and participatory process to create a strategic master plan that embodies our values, speaks to our dreams and meets our needs.”

 As mayor, Stefanini commits to empower a diverse team, adopt policies and propose budgets that will:

  •  Increase the quality and positive outcomes of our schools;
  • Encourage Smart Growth economic development policies;
  • Strengthen the character, security, vitality and environmental integrity of each of our neighborhoods;
  • Improve the community’s collective health by curbing substance abuse;
  • Make efficient use of taxpayer resources to keep our costs affordable;
  • Respect and celebrate our diversity;
  • Preserve open spaces and increase recreational opportunities; and,
  • Work together to ensure the promise of our Charter — a more open, transparent, ethical and participatory local government — is fully realized to all of our benefit.

“I have spent my entire life collaborating with others to make Framingham a better place. I have served, taught and worked in public policy and municipal government my entire professional life, and I am eager to put this skill set to work for the people of Framingham,” said Stefanini.

 A native of Framingham, former State Representative Stefanini is the youngest of five sons of a stone mason and school nurse. He is a graduate of Framingham South High School, the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, the New England School of Law, and Loyola’s International Law Program in Rome.

 After graduating college, Stefanini returned home to teach high school social studies and later served five terms as State Representative and two terms as our Selectman.

During his tenure, Framingham saw the opening of new schools and construction of new Police, Fire and Public Works facilities; adoption of Education Reform & Financing Law; decline in crime rates and establishment of community policing; the creation of four parks and expansion of Callahan State Park; the introduction of curbside recycling; and dramatic cost savings and significant increases in our commercial tax base.

 Stefanini’s current legal practice focuses on real estate, government affairs and public administration. Until recently, he was an adjunct faculty member at Suffolk Law School.

 John and his wife Cecilia live on Bethany Road with their two daughters, Kristina and Julia.
