Cardinal: Massachusetts Catholics Can Have Corned Beef on Saint Patrick’s Day

BOSTON – This year, Saint Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday. That left some Irish Catholic wondering if they had to have the traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner on Saturday, March 18

However, Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley has issued a decree giving Catholics approval to have the traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal on Friday, March 17, even though it is during Lent.

Catholics over the age of 14 are supposed to avoid eating meat on Fridays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, a period of time known as Lent.

The Cardinal in Chicago has also issued the same decree.
