Flyers Hockey Defeats Needham 5-2

NEEDHAM – The Framingham Flyers boys varsity hockey team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Needham Rockets 5-2 Wednesday night at Babson College.

The Flyers improve to 2-0-0 in the Bay State League, 2-1-0 overall.

The game, featuring two teams off to good starts, saw Needham open up the scoring on the first shift of the game off a shot on a 2 on 1 rush.

Needham continued to pressure in the Flyers end through the early parts of the first period.

Framingham began to turn the tide establishing their forecheck and creating some good scoring opportunities.

Sophomore PJ Conzo tied the game tipping home a rebound in front of the Rocket net, with assists to Ben Stefanini and Ryan Innis.  The first period ended 1-1.

Framingham came out flying in the 2nd period, tallying two early goals early in the period.

Nate Nichols gave the Flyers the lead off a one-timer shot from the slot with assists from Scott Swennes and Michael Tersoni.  That same trio connected moments later to put the Flyers up by two goals, coming into the Rockets zone alone down the right wing, with Nichols moving the puck to Swennes in the slot, Swennes rifled a shot passed the Needham net-minder.

The Flyers continued to establish a strong forecheck in the Needham zone throughout the remainder of the period but the Rockets narrowed the deficit to make the game 3-2.

Needham used that momentum to continue to pressure in the Flyers zone, but Framingham held off the Rocket attack to maintain their 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.

The Flyers continued to create good scoring opportunities in the 3rd period, having multiple chances to extend the lead.

As the 3rd period wore on Needham began to press for the tying goal.

With the goalie pulled and the man advantage for Needham, Michael Tersoni intercepted a Needham pass between their two defensemen, skated the puck into the Needham zone and put the puck into the empty net to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead.

With Needham still pressing with goalie pulled Ben Stefanini picked up a loose puck on the right wing boards, moved past the Rocket defense and added another insurance goal to put the Flyers up 5-2.

Alex Moore picked up the win for the Flyers in net, holding off the Needham attack at key times in the game.

The Flyers play host to the MyHockey Live Tournament next Tuesday (Dec. 27) and Wednesday (Dec. 28), opening up against Marshfield on Tuesday night at Loring Arena. Catholic Memorial plays St. John’s Shrewsbury in the other opening night game.
