FRAMINGHAM – The Winter Street bridge will closed this month, and be dismantled as part of a multi-year, long-term bridge project under the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
The MassDOT Winter Street bridge project will replace the existing bridge over the MBTA, Amtrak, and CSX railroads.
It is scheduled to close on Monday, December 19.
Motorists will be asked to use the Fountain Street bridge or the Front Street bridge in Ashland.
The Winter Street bridge is located between Fountain Street and Route 135. It is within walking distance to Keefe Technical High School. For that reason, a pedestrian access will be maintained during the closure.
Northern Construction Services was the low bidder for the estimated $6.6 million project in December 2013, according to MASS DOT. The old bridge will be dismantled, and a new, larger bridge will be constructed.
The project was to have started this spring, but a demolition-related issue arose. The project has already encounted delays as a result of “railroad permitting and utility coordination,” said the MassDOT spokesperson.
For the past couple of weeks, Eversource has been installing a gas main on the new east side of the bridge. The contractor has already completed the sewer bypass for the bridge reconstruction.
