FRAMINGHAM – Timothy C. Berringer, 74, longtime resident of Framingham, and recently of Northbridge, died on February 11, 2023 after a long illness.
Born in Chicago, to Murray and Mercedes (Kolke) Berringer, he was the husband of Betsy Berringer and was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, June (Scott) Berringer.
Raised in Belmont and moved to the suburbs (Framingham) in his youth where he excelled as a three sport athlete for Framingham North High School, graduating in 1966.
Tim graduated from University of Massachusetts in Amherst and was a proud member of the 1969 baseball team that played in the College World Series.
Drafted during Vietnam, he completed his education receiving a Bachelors in Science, before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Following training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, he was stationed at Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England where he was the base athletic director. While there, he played quarterback for the base football team and met his wife, June.
Upon completion of his military service, Tim and June married in England in 1976 and lived in Germany.
He returned to the U.S. in 1978 with his wife and new son Jonathan, settling in MetroWest.
He was employed as the general manager of the Back Bay Racquet Club , owned and operated a local video store in Nobscot and worked as a substitute teacher in the Framingham Public School system.
Tim raised a family and coached his sons while pursuing further education, first at Northeastern University where he earned a M.ED., College Student Development and Counselling, then at Framingham State University where he received a M.A. in Human Resource Administration.
He was a Human Resource business partner for Unilever, overseeing the Breyer’s plant in Framingham, until it’s closure in 2011.
In his retirement, he worked part-time at the MetroWest YMCA.
An avid sportsman and fan, he either played, coached or officiated soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, football, hockey and even took up curling. He was passionate about sports and had a true appreciation for the absolute athleticism of many sports. He was a good golfer and liked to play the local links. He especially loved watching the Patriots, dissecting every play.
After the loss of his beloved wife, June, in 2012, Tim found solace in time spent with his family. He is survived by his son Jonathan, and his wife Ann of Framingham, his son Mark and his wife Lindsay of Framingham and his two grandchildren Jack and Avery Berringer, who gave him endless amounts of joy. He is also survived by his sisters Judith van Zon and her husband Adrian of S. Egremont, MA. and Constance Ballou of Needham, MA. He leaves behind a nephew, James Gould, nieces Jodi Hooper, Alexa Fuller, and Meredith Milord, his Uncle William Bertozzi and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his loving parents Murray and Mercedes Berringer, his sister-in-law Linda Gould, and his beloved wife June.
In 2014, Tim got a second chance at love, and met Betsy (Robinson) Wagoner. They married in the fall of 2016. His family expanded to include step sons Justin Wagoner and his wife Kathi of Ashland, Kyle Wagoner and his wife Grace of Milford and step-daughters Molly Wagoner of Brighton and Pennylane Wagoner of Oak Bluffs. He was a proud “Papa Tim” to Milo and Scarlett, Charles and Audrey. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Eileen Robinson; his brother-in-law Dana Robinson and his wife Eunice of Tennessee; his sister-in-law Jennifer Robinson and her husband Cornelius Modest of St. John; and his sister-in-law Anne Bena and her husband Tom of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Shortly after meeting, Tim and Betsy received the devastating news that he had cancer, which he fought for 7 years with dignity, courage and grace. Betsy was by Tim’s side every step of the way, as his wife, advocate and guardian angel. Tim and Betsy traveled the world together, visiting Nova Scotia, on a cruise and tour of the Mediterranean and in 2018 on a driving tour of Great Britain.
Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. A devoted son, loving husband, dependable brother, guiding father, proud papa, supportive uncle, knowledgeable teacher, coach, mentor and friend…he will be deeply missed.
Family and friends will honor, remember, and celebrate his life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Thursday, February 23 from 4-7 p.m.
His Funeral Services will be held on Friday morning in Cushing Memorial Chapel, 60 Dudley Rd., Framingham at 10 o’clock.
Interment will follow in Edgell Grove Cemetery.
