HOPKINTON – Massachusetts State Police K9 Unit cruiser was struck from behind by a car while the cruiser was stationary in the breakdown lane today, December 19 around 1:44 p.m.
The cruiser was hit while working a road detail on Route 495 southbound in Hopkinton.
The Trooper and K9 were in the cruiser when it was struck, and both were injured.
The Trooper, a 37-year-old male, was transported by ambulance to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he has been admitted and will be observed overnight.
The male K9 was transported, also by Westborough EMS per Nero’s Law, to Tufts Veterinary Hospital in North Grafton. The dog is also being held overnight for observation. Their names will not be released this evening.

The vehicle that struck the marked cruiser was a 2020 Subaru Forester operated by an 81-year-old Connecticut man, who suffered minor injuries in the crash and was also transported to an area hospital.
The crash remains under investigation to determine whether the Subaru’s driver will face criminal charges. That investigation is being led by Troop C, with assistance from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section. MassDOT assisted with traffic management while the on-scene investigation was conducted.
The scene was cleared at 4:16 p.m.
