Framingham Defeats Natick 4-2

NATICK – Framingham High defeated Natick High 4-2 at Chase Arena last night, December 14.

The Redhawks got on the scoreboard first with a shorthanded goal and had a 1-0 lead after the first period.

In the second period, Flyer John Hudson scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game 1-1.

“Last year he was our most improved player and he’s just grown leaps and bounds year over year,” said head Coach Dan Riva. “He’s, he’s got that ability to shoot the hard and shoot it well, and he was able to get a little space there coming down the left side and it just found its way in.”

Noah Albright scored the Flyers second goal, and the two Bay State Conference rivals were tied 2-2 after two periods. Brendan Peck got the assist.

With 7:48 left in the game, Assistant captain Stephen Boulas scored the game-winning goal to give Framingham a 3-2 lead.

Dom Connerney added the insurance goal to make it 4-2.

Natick vs Framingham is always a battle on the ice no matter the records, but this was the season opener for the Flyers.

The battle even drew some blood on the ice.

“It’s just such an emotional game every year when we play them, whether it’s here or at Loring, and who can control their emotions better, I think that they usually comes out on top, so always good to get that win,” said Coach Riva.

“Hudson played well tonight. Stephen Boulas played really well. Even some of our younger guys like Jason Fitch on the back end thought he had a strong game,” said Coach Riva after the game. “And some of our veteran forwards, like Noah and Brendan Peck in that line with Jeremy played as well.”

In goal for the Flyers last night was junior Troy Huber.

“Troy played outstanding,” said Coach Riva. “Unfortunately, we gave up a few more chances than we would’ve liked, but he bailed us out 5, 6, 7 times. They had some great chances right in front of the net, and he goes from post to post really well, and he gets into splits and was able to make those big stops.”

The Flyers, and the Redhawks, had some penalty trouble last night.

“It’s a learning experience tonight, right? There were taunting penalties on both sides there. Helmet came off twice, so we got a misconduct for that. So these are little details that we can hopefully learn from right away and implement tomorrow when we head up to Springfield,” said Coach Riva last night.

Framingham High will travel to Springfield tonight for a game against Pope Francis High at 6:40 p.m.

The Flyers home opener is Saturday at Loring Arena against the Tigers of Newton North High. Puck drops at 7 p.m.

The Flyers have teamed up with Framingham Police for a Cram the Cruiser toy drive. Attendees are asked to bring a new toy for a boy or girl to the game.
