BOSTON – For the first time since the pandemic began, there is now more than 50,000 cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 4,946 new COVD-19 cases today, April 24. That is the largest one-day total since the pandemic began.
There is no cure and no vaccine, reminded the Governor, speaking at a press conference.
Massachusets Governor Charlie Baker had said the surge in COVID-19 cases was expected between April 10 and April 20.
The Governor had extended his order for non-essential businesses to close or operate remotely until May 4, and today he said he is not ready to announce if he is extending that order or would lift it.
Governor Baker said until we have a significant number of days either in a reduction in positive tests or a reduction in hospitalization, it does not make sense to re-open.
“We are not going to be interested in re-opening anything,” until we can see more data, said the Governor.
No commitment to re-open until then, he just said during today’s press conference.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is reporting a total of 50,969 positive cases since the pandemic began, as of April 24.
As of today at 4 p.m., the state has tested 215,213 individuals.
the state tested more than 20,000 individuals in the last 24 hours, the most in a single day.
Since the pandemic began, the Commonwealth is now reporting 2,556 deaths.
(Editor’s Note: The state report does say the deaths it reports every 24 hours may not have happened in the last 24 hours.)
Governor Baker said the number of hospitalization in the Commonwealth is still increasing. he called it a “modest increase, but an increase.”
Middlesex County has the most positive cases at 11,681
Framingham has the most cases in MetroWest at more than 500.
The United States now has the post confirmed cases worldwide at 8886.213, as April 24 at 2:30 p.m.
Worldwide, there are more than 2.78 million confirmed cases.

The Centers for Disease Control is reporting 48,816 deaths as of noon on April 23.

Editor’s Note: The State said today’s data reflects a correction of a reporting error made by Quest, a national commercial laboratory, which affected case counts in multiple states including Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health received a backlog this week of almost 10,000 patient results (both positive and negative) from Quest dating back to April 13. These cases are included for the first time in today’s data. To most accurately reflect real-time trends, DPH sorted the Quest backlog and incorporated confirmed cases into state data based on when those test results should have been reported. In today’s dashboard, daily case counts from April 13 through today now reflect the corrected data.
