FDA Approves Pfizer Vaccine for Ages 12-15

WASHINGTON DC – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today, May 10, authorized use of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine for individuals age 12-15 in the United States.

Next the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee will meet on Wednesday to review the data, and vote on recommendations for use of the shot in adolescents. If the CDC approves, vaccines can be administered immediately.

“Today’s action allows for a younger population to be protected from COVID-19, bringing us closer to returning to a sense of normalcy and to ending the pandemic,” Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said in a statement. “Parents and guardians can rest assured that the agency undertook a rigorous and thorough review of all available data, as we have with all of our COVID-19 vaccine emergency use authorizations.

Pfizer’s vaccine is currently authorized for teenagers aged 16 and older.

The other two vaccines on the market in the U.S., from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, are only authorized for adults, but the companies are testing the shots in youths.
