BUFFALO, NEW YORK – Anne-Danielle Aka was among several Canisius students who rolled up their sleeves to participate in the college’s first-ever Virtual Service Week.

Aka is from Framingham, and is pursuing a degree in Animal Behavior Ecology Conservation. She is a Framingham High Class of 2019 graduate.

Organized by The New Buffalo Institute at Canisius, Virtual Service Week took place from October 19 – 23, 2020. Each day represented a different service theme: social justice, borders and migration, healthcare and health equity, environment and sustainability, and education. Students could chose to participate in one or more of the themed events, each of which offered various opportunities for them to engage in service, advocate for change, or to collaborate with or make a donation to a community partner.

Film screenings and educational resources were also part of the week’s activites and since the service was primarily virtual, students were asked to share their participation efforts via social media posts.

The New Buffalo Institute (NBI) at Canisius College aligns research, service and educational programming toward the many neighborhoods on Buffalo’s East Side, including its own Hamlin Park neighborhood. The NBI affirms its commitment to social justice, provides a welcoming place for community partners to convene, voice concerns and exchange ideas. Informed by our Catholic, Jesuit tradition, the NBI is committed to finding new ways to address the challenges confronting the neighborhoods of the East Side and to work in solidarity with all of our community partners.
