Nurses at MetroWest Medical Center’s Beautiful Beginnings Maternity Unit recently participated in an intensive training day focused on enhancing care for newborns during the critical first hours after birth and in the hospital’s Continuing Care Nursery, where infants require additional support post-delivery.

“Ongoing education like this is crucial to the development of our nurses who are new to maternity care,” said Jennifer Kingsbury, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing, Maternity. “It prepares them to be able to better care for their patients effectively.  We ensure all nursing staff have the tools they need to do full assessments on their patients and be able to identify any concerns so they may bring them to the attention of the pediatric team.”

Kingsbury emphasized that MetroWest Medical Center is committed to equipping every staff member with the knowledge and skills needed to confidently manage any challenges that may arise in newborn care.  She highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between nurses and the pediatric team, noting that this teamwork leads to improved outcomes for infants and a more reassuring experience for parents. “We want our patients to focus on enjoying their new baby as much as possible,” Kingsbury said.

Organized by interim perinatal nurse educator Cathy Curbow, RN, the event included expert-led presentations on neonatal transition, developmental care, respiratory support, and resuscitation. After the class, nurses participated in a hands-on skill session to practice what they learned. This type of training is key to helping staff gain confidence in responding to both routine and emergency situations in newborn care.

Earlier in the week, a separate session on Newborn Head-to-Toe Assessment was led by experienced Continuing Care Nursery charge nurses Jeanne Claus, RN, Ann Currie, RN, and Diane Converse, RN to support newer team members.
