It is with a heavy heart to announce the passing of Edward Francis Moriarty, age 81, of Framingham, Massachusetts on February 5, 2025, at Metrowest Medical Center, after a short illness. Ed was born in Natick, Mass on November 20, 1943, the son of the late Francis and Orene (Brown) Moriarty. He is predeceased by his sister JoAnne Meuse (David) and nephew David Meuse. He is survived by his wife Janet S. Moriarty (Redding), their two sons, Sean E. Moriarty (Christy) and Todd Moriarty; two granddaughters Megan Moriarty and Riley Moriarty; his sister Patricia Brown and brothers Jerry Moriarty (Cheryl) and Brian Moriarty; nephews Jerome T. Moriarty and Matthew Bretschneider (Maggie Kuch); nieces Robin Azzara (Terry), Doreen Bonczkiewicz (John), Erin Moriarty, and Kimberly Cahill (Colin); and many cousins.
Ed graduated from Natick High School in 1962 and immediately started working at his uncle’s Esso service station as a mechanic. He worked at Bob Redding’s (father-in-law) Jenney service station on Rt 9, where he met his wife Janet of 58 years, and then worked as a service manager for Gateway Lincoln Mercury. In 1971 he partnered with his father-in-law, Bob Redding and they opened Suburban Shell Service on Old Connecticut Path in Framingham. Following Bob’s passing in 1982, Ed and Janet, purchased the remaining shares and successfully ran their family operated service station for 49 years. In his post-retirement, Ed worked as a school bus driver for Connolly Bus Company and drove the same route he took as a child.
Ed and Janet raised their two loving sons, Sean and Todd, in Saxonville (Framingham). Ed was a consummate gentleman. He was kind, considerate, honest, respectful and humble. He was an adept automobile mechanic who treated his customers and his friends like family. He helped everyone and was generous with his time and talents.
In addition to spending time with family, Ed had two notable hobbies: target shooting and antique vehicles. He was a National Rifle Association (NRA) “Master” shooter and “Distinguished Expert”, two-time Massachusetts State Pistol Champion, Rhode Island State Pistol champion, top ten shooter at the Nationals at Camp Perry, winner of the distinguished Olglethorpe trophy, and holder of four National Records, two individual and two teams. His 1988 NRA Indoor Conventional Pistol, 30 shots, Center Fire, 25 yards, Gallery Course Open National Record score of 300-12X was officially retired and can never be broken.
Ed’s second notable hobby was the restoration and preservation of his antique automobiles. He particularly favored unique underdog cars, and he blended hard work with his passion to successfully restore them. He enjoyed attending car shows, particularly with his son Sean and later with his brother Brian. He especially liked sharing his knowledge and learning from other car enthusiasts, as well as making new friends. Through his attention to detail and artistry, four of Ed’s vehicles obtained the coveted Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Senior Grand National Award.
Above all, Ed was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, son, and brother. He appreciated the importance of character and family values, and the center of his life was always his family. He and his wife Janet enjoyed a great life together. He was exceptionally proud of his sons, Sean and Todd, he rejoiced in hearing about and spending time with his daughter-in-law Christy and his beloved granddaughters Megan and Riley, as well as his brother Brian. Ed gained many friends during his life. He was a Great Man, and he will be profoundly missed.
