Station will close starting August 26 through the fall.
The MBTA today announced that Ashland Station, on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line, will receive $2.5 million in station repairs and improvements. This work will include the complete restoration of the pedestrian overpass, including stairs and walkways; platform resurfacing and painting; repairs and improvements to the accessible platform; upgraded lighting; and installation of digital signage. In order to perform this critical improvement work, Ashland Station will close on August 26 through fall 2023 with alternate shuttle bus service available for passengers.
“We’re pleased to deliver these critical improvements at Ashland Station, to ensure safe and accessible access for the Ashland community and our passengers when complete,” said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “We’re investing in needed maintenance of our facilities as we work on the station’s pedestrian overpass, walkways, and platforms while also improving the customer experience with better lighting, new digital signs, and more. I’d like to thank our teams at the MBTA and Keolis for their work on this project; Senate President Spilka, Town Manager Herbert, Representative Lewis, other local leaders, stakeholders, community groups, and more for their strong advocacy and collaboration on both our upcoming work and alternate service plans; and the riders we serve for their patience as we complete these upgrades over the next few months.”
“Safe and reliable public transportation transit for our communities is fundamental to our success as a Commonwealth,” said Massachusetts Senate President Karen E. Spilka. “I have fought for years for investments to update this important commuter rail stop and am very grateful to the Administration for prioritizing this project. I’m also grateful to the MBTA for providing bus service to mitigate disruption to commuters.”
“We are delighted that the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has initiated much-needed repairs at the Ashland Commuter Rail Station,” said Ashland Town Manager Michael D. Herbert. “This pivotal upgrade represents the culmination of sustained advocacy by the Select Board, our legislative delegation, and myself. We have been committed to this endeavor for an extended period, recognizing the essential role that the station plays in serving our community. Our sincere thanks go out to the MBTA for listening to our appeals and taking the necessary steps to enhance the safety, efficiency, and overall quality of the transportation services our residents depend on daily.”
“I am grateful to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for moving forward with these vital improvements to the Ashland Commuter Rail Station and for my steadfast and successful partnership with Town Manager Michael Herbert, the Ashland Select Board, and Senate President Karen Spilka,” said State Representative Jack Patrick Lewis. “While the next several months are going to require dramatic changes for Ashland commuters, the improvements will support our community for decades to come.”
During the station closure, accessible shuttle buses will provide service between Ashland and Framingham Stations. Shuttle buses will pick up passengers at each station. The schedule and location of shuttle bus stops will be available online soon. Parking is also available at neighboring stations, including Framingham Station (4.1 miles away or about a 12-minute drive) and Southborough Station (2.6 miles away or about a 5-minute drive).
