Dear GIC Commissioners and Dr. Herman,

As members of the Framingham School Committee, we write to express our dissatisfaction at your recent action to limit healthcare providers for government employees and retirees. We struggle to agree with the methods taken to make such a drastic change without prior dialogue with government organizations, such as School Committees, and without proper time for inputs from those impacted. Just in our city school department, your decision is impacting hundreds of teachers, administrators, custodians, nurses, librarians, coaches, clerical staff, food service workers, retirees, and their families.

We understand the complex challenge of healthcare cost containment. Yet even more so we understand and value the ability for government employees to keep the doctors they are comfortable visiting with copays they can manage. Should options need to change, we value collaborative processes, rather than the rushed, behind the-scenes process that seems to characterize the current situation.

Framingham Public Schools is an enthusiastic and willing partner, eager to work with other GIC member communities and your Commission on a long term plan. We ask that you revisit your 8-5 vote, put your reforms on strategic pause, and work collaboratively to pursue an improved path forward for all.

Sincerely,
Framingham School Committee
