LETTER: Ottaviani Will Be An ‘Inclusive’ and ‘Open-Minded’ City Councilor

Philip Ottaviani has the track record, passion, temperament, experience, and deep-rooted understanding of the challenges facing Framingham to be the best candidate for the District 6 City Council seat.

Over the past 26 years that I have lived in Precinct 11 (now District 6), Mr. Ottaviani has continuously been one of my representatives to  Town Meeting. I have also had the extreme pleasure for the past 11 years, of serving alongside Mr. Ottaviani on Framingham’s Zoning Board of Appeals.

Through this lens, I have come to appreciate Mr. Ottaviani’s extraordinary connection to the people and history of Framingham, and particularly, Framingham’s south side. I have also witnessed his keen sense of devotion to the character of the neighborhoods and the quality of the lives of the people living in those neighborhoods.

Through Mr. Ottaviani’s service as the Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, I have witnessed the kind of intelligent, open-minded, patient and inclusive leadership that I believe will be needed in the role of City Council during this important time of transition.

He has shown the courage to make difficult choices when they were in the community’s best interest, even during highly-charged public debate, and even when those choices sometimes lead to personal criticism. It is this kind of leadership we need in our new City Council.

At the same time, Mr. Ottaviani’s ongoing and active role in Framingham’s business, real estate, and community development community, as well as his, and his family’s passionate involvement in the local cultural, religious, and other philanthropic activities, serve to make him a well-informed advocate for realistic and actionable governance.

We need representation and leadership in our City Council that is, and has continuously been deeply engaged with the business, educational, and civic life in Framingham and its neighborhoods. Mr. Ottaviani is the District 6 candidate with that engagement.

While Mr. Ottaviani and I have disagreed on the proper outcome for applications that have come before the Zoning Board, I have never doubted that he was motivated purely by a desire to make Framingham a better place for everyone, and I have always respected his intelligent and compassionate analysis.

In short, Mr. Ottaviani is passionate, engaged, inclusive and informed and will provide the principled leadership needed for the new City of Framingham. For these reasons, Mr. Ottaviani has my unconditional support as candidate for the District 6 City Council Seat.

Stephen E. Meltzer, Esq.
