As a long-time community volunteer and former elected town official, I am writing to comment on a matter of deep concern to me in the upcoming city elections.
One of our candidates for Mayor, Yvonne Spicer, is an individual who I know to be a very good person.
However, my concern over Ms. Spicer’s candidacy is that I have explored her record of civic engagement and found what I believe to be a record that does not speak well to her being a candidate for Mayor.
Ms. Spicer has a dismal voting record. She did not vote in any municipal election from 2004-2016.
This means to me that she failed to be on the record on the many important issues facing our community all these years. It also informs us that she did not educate herself about the candidates and issues in each of these town elections, did not get to know the concerns and opinions of the people of Framingham and did not believe it was important to participate in the civic life of our community.
We are looking for a person who can lead from a base of knowledge and engagement in the life of our community – someone who knows our neighborhoods, someone who knows the important issues affecting our future and someone who knows how to bring people together to get things done.
While I applaud Ms. Spicer’s recent involvement, her record tell us that she is not ready to assume the role of civic leader.
While Ms. Spicer refers to herself as a “beacon of light” in her quest for office, her record of non-participation does not support this sentiment.
Given her absence from citizen participation in the life of Framingham these many years, Ms. Spicer is not prepared to provide the kind of strong informed leadership we will require in the months and years ahead.
It is important for me to say that I am supporting John Stefanini for Mayor but neither Mr. Stefanini nor his campaign have asked me to write this letter.
