After serving as a communications cryptographer with Top Secret Security clearance in the US Navy from 1950-1958, he attended Northeastern University.
His main interests included a great love of the outdoors. He spent many years camping, hiking, fishing and hunting all throughout the New England area.
He was an active member in Plymouth Church in Framingham, and a volunteer of Framingham’s Pack 68 Cub Scout troop. With over 50 years of service to the Boy Scouts of America, Howard served as Scoutmaster to Framingham’s Troop 12, and through his leadership, increased the membership to a peak of 72 boy scouts with a dozen volunteer parents. As a result of his dedication, Howard was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America. He later served as a volunteer adult at the District and Council level as a registered Commissioner for the Algonquin Council and the Knox Trail Council. Howard changed many boys’ lives through his tireless efforts in Scouting.
Holmes is survived by two sons, E. Jonathan Holmes and his wife Kathy of Kentucky, Christopher Holmes of Framingham, and his life partner Anthony Peso, and his brother, Richard Holmes and wife Donna of Hudson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife June (Boulter), his parents, Harold & Lois (Hussey) Holmes, and his brother Robert Holmes.
Family and friends will honor and remember his life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St., Framingham, on Tuesday, August 8 from 4 to 8 p.m.
His funeral services will be celebrated in the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock.
Interment will be private.
