BOSTON – The Framingham High boys ice hockey season came to an end at the TD Garden Sunday night in the MIAA Division 1 State championship game.
St. Mary’s of Lynn with its 4-2 victory, won the school’s first-ever hockey state championship, after losing to Franklin High in the finals last year in overtime 4-3.
The Spartans win the state title with a record of 18-7-2. The Flyers finish the season 16-7-4.
The Flyers, under first-year head coach Will Ortiz battled to a scoreless tie after the first period.
But in the second period, the Flyers dug themselves into a hole, allowing three Spartan goals, including two in the final two minutes of that period.
Less than a minute into the middle period, St. Mary’s senior captain Mike Zampanti, scored the first goal of the game, to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
With less than two minutes left in the second period, St. Mary’s Dante Maribito sped past the Flyers defense and scored a wrist shot just below the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Zampanti scored a third Spartans’ goal with less than a minute left in the second period, to give St. Mary’s a 3-0 lead headed into the final period.
The Spartans secured their win with their fourth goal of the night, when senior captain Maribito scored his second goal of the game.
Despite two goals from Framingham senior captain Scott Swennes in the third period, Framingham could complete a comeback. Swennes scored at 10:21 and 2:40 in the final period against senior goalie Andrew LoRusso.
